A boon for PSIA-AASI members, Slingshot ANATOMY OF A WAKE FOIL

Curious about what the wake foiling gear entails and how to set it up? Take a look DW WKHVH OLQNV Q 4XLFN 6WDUW *XLGH 3') WLQ\ FF WVW \ Q 3URGXFW 'HVFULSWLRQV WLQ\ FF FZVW \

is leading the charge on hydrofoil research and design, and in addition to wake foils they also build hydrofoils for kitesurfing, windsurf- ing, surf foiling, and SUP foiling. Not only do they provide the equipment, they’ve jumped into education with a series of e-learning programs for each type of foiling with begin- ner through intermediate progressions. Armed with our wake surfing experi-

ence, the wake foil e-learning videos, and the prototype wake foil, we set out to learn, with the goal of foil surfing the wake with- out a rope. It took two full summers and endless amounts of patience, but the expe- rience of surfing two feet above the water is like nothing I’ve ever experienced and was worth every bruise and scrape. Learning to wake foil is difficult, humbling,

occasionally painful, and – ultimately – incred- ibly rewarding. Here are five keys to learn- ing how to successfully wake foil, developed through my experiences with Slingshot, as well as time spent teaching dozens of others.

1. Learn to Wake Surf First The first step in learning to foil is getting comfortable in the water and learning how to get up (watch this video at tiny.cc/6yst2y). Getting up on a foil is very similar to wake surfing, but adding the foil and mast makes the board more cumbersome, less maneuverable, and a little more danger- ous, so until you are comfortable getting up behind the boat and surfing the wave, don’t even think about adding the mast. Slingshot’s 2019 wake foil boards are designed for just this dual purpose. The boards have fin slots so you can leave the mast off and ride it just like a wake surf board. Once you’ve mastered wake surfing you can remove the fins and attach the foil.

2. Now, Forget Everything You Know About Surfing Wake foiling relies heavily on the balance and skill you develop while learning to wake surf, but beyond that it is a completely different sport. In fact, the better you are at wake surfing the more frustrating the initial stages may be. On a surf board, pressuring the tail

works like a brake while fore pressure allows water to push under the tail speeding you up. A good wakesurfer can find the median point, and knows how to anticipate and move fore and aft to keep speed with the wave and the boat. Foiling changes everything. Moving your weight over the tail engages the foil, which reduces drag and creates lift.
