PSIA-AASI Honors Western Division’s Ted Pitcher for Educational Excellence

Ted Pitcher, a standout educator in the realms of adaptive and senior instruction has received PSIA-AASI’s prestigious Educa- tional Excellence Award. Pitcher’s commitment to education changed

the way PSIA-AASI approaches both adaptive and senior instruction. Pitcher saw the need for consistent and certified adaptive instruc- tion, and, in 1984, he created the first exam format used by Western Division. Two years later he approached the PSIA-AASI national office to pitch his educational programing and push for consistent adaptive instruct- ing resources. In 1990, adaptive skiing and riding officially became its own discipline, across all of PSIA-AASI divisions. A nomi- nation letter submitted on Pitcher’s behalf states, “His impact on adaptive skiing and its acceptance at ski areas throughout the world cannot be overstated. He trained examiners, wrote the exams, and oversaw the earliest events until acceptance by PSIA-AASI.” Pitcher also recognized the needs of seniors learning to ski and ride and saw the

need for specialized senior instruction. He was pivotal in the development of the senior specialist credential used by the Western Division. A member of PSIA-AASI since 1977, he is a member of Western Division’s Board of Directors and has served as a chair for Western Division’s Senior and Heritage Committees Certified at Level III in both the alpine and adaptive disciplines, and with a Children’s Specialist 2 credential, Pitcher is a member of California’s Heavenly Ski & Ride School.
