Creating a battery stop in the canopy enables you to change packs more swiftly without needing to worry about affi xing the straps each time. I went with a golf tee embedded into the foam with hot glue, and it’s worked like a charm. When taking off, a hand launch is required because this model doesn’t have

functioning gear. When I was taking off, I turned the SAFE technology on and was pleasantly surprised that 1

throttle, paired with a gentle toss into the wind at a slight upward angle, produced a smooth launch without requiring any input to the controls. In fact, when using the factory CG (center of gravity), I didn’t have to enter any trim adjustments. When the aircraft is aloft, beginners will want to keep the SAFE technology on because it limits the achievable angles. This allows for better orientation and awareness. More advanced aeromodelers can forgo SAFE, while still enjoying the benefi ts of the AS3X stabilization because the fl ights are smooth and easily controllable. Rolls and inverted fl ights are easy to track with a slight bit of down-elevator using the recommended CG settings. Landings are straightforward. Before touching down, reduce the throttle to nothing and gently fl are the aircraft as it begins to interact with the ground-effect air. A robust, plastic skid plate at the front of the fuselage directly behind the cowl handles most of the scuffs that are attributed with belly landings.

I noticed the molded cowl’s thin plastic. The scale

appearance is good, but its longevity is questionable. As long as you fi nd a soft patch of grass to land over, you shouldn’t have cause for too much concern, but I think it could be improved upon by adding some thickness to the plastic.

In summary, this is a fun-to-

fl y aircraft. The lack of landing gear allows the airplane to cut through the sky with a very scalelike appearance. The 10-plus-minute fl ight time and easy-to-enjoy fl ight characteristics add up to a real winner. Horizon Hobby has defi nitely developed a formula for success, and the ParkZone F4F Wildcat 1.0m BNF Basic is no exception.
