SKATING: Where would you like to see the Learn to Skate USA membership at the end of your four-year term?


AC: We have set a goal in our strategic plan to grow the Learn to Skate USA membership by 15 percent.


SKATING: What else can U.S. Figure Skating do to help clubs increase membership and improve their financial bottom line?


AC: I think revamping the bridge program and providing materials to implement it will help increase club membership. Continuing with our brand awareness campaign and getting our top athletes out in the public eye will also help draw people to skating, which in turn grows club membership. We also have newsletters and a fully committed membership services group at headquarters that is creating more webinars and other educational materials to help the clubs grow and become more efficient. We have financial webinars and presentations and need to continue to offer these and make sure our clubs are aware they are available to assist them with their financial bottom line.


SKATING: What else does U.S. Figure Skating need to do to ensure athlete safety and well-be- ing under SafeSport?


AC: We need to vigilantly keep an environment of awareness. In conjunction with the Center for SafeSport, we need to make sure to offer appropriate educational programs to all of our membership. For example, training for coaches should be different than training for parents. Since we are constantly gaining new members, and new volunteers are becoming involved in club leadership, we need to make sure everyone is current with training.


SKATING: When do you see the new com- petition restructuring measures just passed at Governing Council paying dividends for U.S. Figure Skating?


AC: I think we will see benefits beginning in the first season in the execution and quality of our events. I think internationally, we may see early results as soon as the 2022 Olympics and definitely in the quadrennial cycle following the next Olympics.


SKATING: What does U.S. Figure Skating need to do to cultivate an internationally successful pairs program?


AC: Te High Performance Department has al-


ready begun implementing steps toward cultivat- ing an internationally successful pairs program. In June, the Pairs Camp included successful pairs coaches from outside the U.S. to share their techniques with our coaches and athletes. We have recently secured successful coaches to teach in the U.S. With our coaches working concur- rently with outside resource experts, we see this strengthening our program. We also need to cultivate an environment where our teams stay together as pairs and grow together.


SKATING: What does U.S. Figure Skating and the international skating community still need to do to show that synchronized skating belongs in the Olympics?


AC: We need to present a plan that helps the International Olympic Committee (IOC) realize the benefit of including synchronized skating in the Olympics — how the increased number of athletes may be accommodated in the athletes’ village for example — and how including this event facilitates growth in participation in winter sports and Olympic viewership. I feel additional television airtime would assist our goal by exposing this discipline to the viewing public worldwide. I believe many people would be amazed and intrigued by the skating and synchronicity skills, thereby applying pressure on the IOC to include it.
