Letters to the editor

KIMBERLY MEYERS BAAS (BA ’93) I read the fall issue (“Liſting up commu- nities in the wake of crime”) from cover to cover. I am a public high school art and design teacher with a social justice edge (because of Loyola and a JVC volunteer year). I teach at one of the most diverse high schools in the country and I see vio- lence as one of our most urgent concerns in our communities. The cover was beau- tifully designed and I hung it in my class- room as an example for superior magazine cover design. This issue had a profound effect on my

start of the school year as I was thinking a lot about where violence comes from and what I can do in the classroom to talk about it. The publication is awesome, it helps me reflect on and connect my work to the Jesuit mission and my Loyola education. Keep up the good work!

LAURA ANDRIANI (BA ’02) I did [the midnight bike ride] with Dr. Gil- foyle in 2002 when I was a senior at Loyola (“Chicago aſter dark,” Fall 2017). I am be- yond pleased and proud to see that the tradition continues! That still continues to be one of my best memories as a student at Loyola!

TERESE MULKERN TERRY (BS ’59) Reading the students’ remembrances of their dorm experiences (“What do you remember most about your freshmen dorm?”) in the Fall 2017 Loyolamagazine, I couldn’t help but recall my experience

in the first girls’ dorm in 1956. We had “hours” and not getting in the dorm by a certain hour could get one “campused.” I don’t remember what the daily time

restraints were, but once a month we were allowed to stay out until 2 a.m. Our dates would drop us at the door and wait while we ran upstairs and freshened up. Then we returned to the boys. “Where are you going?” said the house mother. “We’re off to the Printers’ Mass at Old St. Pat’s.” And off we went, joining the men who put the Sunday editions of the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Daily News, and Sun-Times to bed and attended the 3 a.m. celebration of Mass. Aſter breakfast we watched the sunrise from Adler Planetarium Pier.

GERALD J. DILLEY Since I am married to a previous Mun- delein student, Sandra L. Sierzega Dilley (MUND ’64), we receive Loyola magazine. As an ex-pat South Side Chicagoan, living in Colorado since 1983, I read Loyola from back to front, checking out the happenings of folks from the 60s that I remember before all else. It was great to see the picture on page

34 of the fall issue of the old basketballers from the George Ireland era. As a graduate of Leo HS in 1959, I remember Marty Nor- ville’s beautiful jump shot, Chico Driscoll’s spirited play, and John Egan swishing them from the outside in Catholic League South Section games. Thanks for the memories, and thanks for Loyola magazine.
