AFS STUDIES PERMANENT MOLD DISTORTION

AFS has funded new research to better understand and control permanent mold distortion in aluminum casting.

Problem: Each casting cycle introduces heat into local areas of the mold, creating severe thermal gradients which can cause mold stress, deformation, changes in in microstructure, geometry and mold dimensions.

Research: The goal of this proj- ect is to identify the sources of mold distortion, predict when and where distortion will occur and develop methods of control. The project is being conducted by Dante Solutions, Inc. and Case Western Reserve University. The project is sponsored by the Aluminum Division.

process variables.

The course also will address green sand quality control tests.
