AFS Represents Metalcasting at RAPID + TCT AFS staff were on hand at the

RAPID + TCT event in Pittsburgh, May 8-11, to represent the met- alcasting industry and showcase how the industry is using addi- tive manufacturing to better meet customer demands. More than 3,000 attendees came to RAPID to network and learn more about rapid manufacturing in its 27th year. RAPID is the largest show of its kind in the U.S. AFS helped orga-

nize several casting seminars that dis- cussed how metalcast- ing is using 3-D ad- ditive manufacturing methods, including a

pre-conference workshop on cast- ing processes and materials and a special metalcasting track held

during the regular conference. Zayna Connor, AFS vice presi- dent of technical services, served as an event advisor. AFS also had a booth exhibit on the show floor highlighting various casting examples and the available cast- ing supply chain to the audience and demonstrating how metalcasting is a viable option in all types of manufactur- ing, including pro- totyping and rapid manufacturing. Division Notebook: Iron Research Committee Considering Proposals The Gray, Ductile and Com-

pacted Graphite Iron Research Committee (5-R) is part of the AFS Cast Iron Division and focuses on new technology, current state-of- the-art technology, and technology transfer. The committee meets three times per year with one of the meetings held at a university with a metalcasting program in conjunc- tion with an AFS student chapter meeting. Past university visits have in-

cluded the University of Alabama- Birmingham and the University of Missouri-Rolla. In 2017, the 5-R committee is targeted to hold its September 2017 meeting at Michi- gan Tech. The off-site, on campus meetings allow students to interact directly with industry professionals for a better understanding of the opportunities and career accom- plishments available within the metalcasting industry. One of the main responsibilities of the 5-R committee is to review

and be involved in cast iron research proposals. Research proposals can originate from university profes- sors, graduate, and undergraduate students, foundry members, research consultants, and the casting supplier base. Proposals are reviewed for le- gitimacy on technical content, clear appropriation and use of funding, possibilities for collaboration among AFS members and other involved parties, and feasibility of the re- search to improve the knowledge of cast iron and/or the advancement of certain products or processes. Current projects under consider-

ation include the following: • Further studies on the effect of the relationship of Mn-S in regards to mechanical properties.

• The effect of boron in gray iron. • Self-healing micro-porosity in ductile iron.

• Effects of dross in ductile iron fatigue performance.

• Ductile iron grain refinement by heat treatment.

• Solution strengthened ferritic ductile iron—strain life fatigue database. A steering committee is assigned

to each research proposal. Steer- ing committees help the researcher with initial proposals, technical updates, and final project clarifica- tion. Proposals would be approved by the entire 5-R committee for final approval for funds by the AFS Research Board. Committee members also par- ticipate in standards committees for ASTM and ISO, a critical issue for foundry members as many of the indi- viduals on ASTM and ISO commit- tees are OEM and academic based. Membership in committees gives

access to unpublished open discus- sions and networking with peers on the state of the industry and new technologies in regards to cast iron product advancement. For more information on the com- mittee and how to join, contact Laura Kasch,
