Another year has come to a close and it’s time to look ahead to a new year and new opportunities. For the past few months, the team and I have already been planning, scheduling and working on Living Lutheran for 2018. Over the next 12 months, Living Lutheran is going to focus on leaders and leadership throughout the church.

From individuals to congregations, rostered or lay, at every level, leaders are sharing their gifts. “Form a faithful foundation” (page 14) shows how leadership begins in living out our baptismal promises as children of God and grows throughout our faith journey.

In fact, every feature this month speaks to leadership. On page 38, Ordean Oen, inspired by childhood memories, accomplishes an amazing goal in “Jars and jars of giving.” “Past experience not necessary” (page 21), “The path to citizenship” (page 24) and “A welcome home” (page 33) tell the stories of how ELCA congregations are training, sustaining and supporting individuals and their communities. “Perspective: Confessing racism” (page 36) and “My faith journey: A second call” (page 40) off er individual insight on these personal topics.

And, as Always Being Made New: The Campaign for the ELCA enters its fi nal year, its steering committee co-chairs, MaryAnn and Loren Anderson, discuss the current work and the future for the campaign in “Building the church for tomorrow” (page 26).

I am thankful for your continued readership and blessed to be able to continue telling the stories of the church. Happy New Year!
