TRIATHLON THROWBACK
Triathlon has changed in many ways over the last 40-plus years. Before bike racks, transiti on zones, ti ming chips and wave starts, there was the very rst organized triathlon, which was held in reverse order (run, bike, swim) in San Diego, California, in 1974. USA Triathlon Kids’ junior reporters caught up with Olympians Laura and Greg Bennett and Hunter Kemper, who got their start in the sport as youth and junior triathletes in the mid-1980s. The Bennett s and Kemper share their multi sport journeys and how the sport has evolved.
LAURA AND GREG BENNETT
U.S. Olympian (2008, 2012), Australian Olympian (2004)

USA Triathln Kids: How has triathlon changed through the years?

Gregg Bennett: For one, a lot more people are doing it since I started in 1986. We didn't have anything special on the bikes. We didn't have the things we have now, like the special aerobars that make you go faster or the clip-in pedals for our shoes. We didn't wear many clothes back then. The man wore little wsimsuits with no top, and now we have a lot more triathlon-specific clothing. Yhe bikes now come with little containers to store our food and drinks, but we didn't have that back in the '80s.

Laura Bennett: One good thing that they had when I started doing triathlon around your age was IRONKIDS racing. That's nice how they had it way back then, and it's still going today as a fun run. All the technology is probably the biggest thing that has changed, and the amount of participation.

USAT: What's the biggest change in the sport?

GB: Triathlon going into the Olympics. That was big - very big. When I started, we ddn't think that we'd ever be in the Olympics. I think it was about 1995 that they announced that triathlon was going to be in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. That was a big change for our sport. It mean that we weren't just a little, sideline sport. We were now a sport that was known al around the world.

LB: I'd have to agree. We've made it to the world's stage.
